The 606 Universal Shelving System will form part of an exhibition opening at London’s Design Museum on 24 August 2011.

The exhibition, called This is Design, is a celebration of the Design Museum’s Collection, which examines the impact of design on the modern world, whilst also exploring the consequences of design and how it shapes our lives and contemporary culture.

The 606 Universal Shelving System is featured in the exhibition’s lifecycle-themed section, because it has been in continuous production for over 50 years.

Examples of the system from its early production in the 1960s will sit comfortably on the same aluminium E-tracks as their modern counterparts, demonstrating the small but important improvements that have been made over time.

Curator Alex Newson said: “Designed and built to last a lifetime, the 606 Universal Shelving System is the perfect exhibit to investigate issues concerning product lifecycle and obsolescence.”

The rest of the exhibition includes prototypes, drawings, models, first editions and finished industrial objects, brought together by the themes identity, manufacturing innovations and the digital revolution.
