It is a little-known fact that we have made our shelving system in Britain since 1987. Today 95% of the components are British-made.

Made by Britain

Vitsœ’s modern craftsmanship and homegrown manufacturing is being championed as part of the British government’s Made by Britain campaign.

When Frank Dobson, Member of Parliament, gave his nomination, he said: “Vitsœ is a brilliant example of a design-led manufacturer whose longevity is testament to the sheer quality and desirability of its product.”

Our video, right, offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at life in our London workshop, where we assemble the enduring shelving system Mr Dobson has praised.

“There’s nothing complicated in the system. Most of the system, in fact, is probably hidden. I think that’s the winning part of it. It just looks good full, as well as empty.”

“We don’t allow any discrepancies on the individual components at all. We are very hard on our suppliers. But then, that’s the only way that you’ll get the perfect product.”

Manufacture and assembly

E-tracks; shelves; pins – all of these familiar bits and pieces, indeed almost all components, are manufactured in Great Britain.

A lifecycle analysis by Cambridge University noted, with deserved gusto, that “the average distance from supplier to Vitsœ is 19 miles, with over 40% of suppliers being located within the M25 ring road in London.” Impressive.

We have forged long-lasting relationships with these modern craftsmen who, for example, turn raw sheets of metal into elegant, painted shelves.

Orders are assembled in our workshop in Camden, London, before being dispatched directly to customers around the world.

Vitsœ’s ethos

Back in 1959 Vitsœ’s proposition was to eschew fashion while creating products that would be the neutral canvas on which to paint your colourful life.

After half a century our resolve is stronger than ever: more of us must learn the art of living better with less that lasts longer.

Our shelving system

Designed by Dieter Rams in 1960, 606 Universal Shelving System was conceived to be timeless.

You can start small, add to it, rearrange it and take it with you when you move.

You can buy a single shelf or an entire library.
